Gmail SMTP Setup
Step-by-step setup for Gmail and Google Workspace, including creating the App Password Google requires.
Your normal Gmail password will not work
Google blocks basic password sign-in for SMTP. You must create a 16-character App Password, which requires 2-Step Verification to be on.
Step by step
- 1
Turn on 2-Step Verification
Go to your Google Account → Security → 2-Step Verification and complete the setup. App Passwords are unavailable until this is on.
- 2
Create an App Password
Google Account → Security → App passwords. Name it "Vecta" and copy the 16-character code Google shows you. It's displayed once.
- 3
Add the config in Vecta
Use the settings below, pasting the App Password (spaces don't matter) into the password field.
- 4
Save and check the test
Vecta sends a test email straight away. A Healthy badge means you're done.
Host: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Username: you@gmail.com (or you@yourdomain.com on Workspace) Password: the 16-character App Password From: the same address as the username
Sending limits
| Account type | Approximate daily limit | Suggested cap |
|---|---|---|
| Free Gmail | 500 recipients/day | 300 |
| Google Workspace | 2,000 recipients/day | 1,500 |
Google counts recipients, not messages
An email to 10 people counts as 10. Exceeding the limit locks sending for around 24 hours.
Common problems
- 535 Authentication failed. You used your normal password instead of the App Password, or 2-Step Verification isn't on.
- From address rejected, on Workspace, the From address must be your address or a verified alias.
- Sending suddenly stops: you've hit the daily limit; it resets automatically.
